The Streets of Tawa walk

This walk, which we called "The Streets of Tawa", was compiled for Club Intermed (mostly 10-12 year olds) and undertaken on a cold winter's night in June 2003. A few small changes have since been made in order for anyone else (you, if you wish) to do the walk, and ensuring that the starting and finishing points are one and the same.

As you will see, street names are not used. Instead directions such as "first right" and "left at T" (turn left at the T-intersection) are given. Always continue in the same direction in which you've already been heading, until the instructions tell you otherwise. If you don't want to know where the walk actually takes you, it might pay to go to the printer-friendly version now. Otherwise the photographs below might spoil things.

The directions are reasonably simple and, if you answer the 44 questions along the way, the whole thing will probably take around 75-90 minutes. If you don't answer the questions, it should take about an hour.

Starting at Tawa Intermediate School in Ranui Tce, walk along the street - away from the Intermediate School - on footpath on left.

1. At house no. 31, the sign reads: 24 hour monitored ADT 0800 ....... What are the numbers that follow 0800?

Continue on.

2. On the corner with Kowhai St, what numbers are under TEST 96?

3. After house no. 45, how many separate yellow lines are there at the side of the road before the fire hydrant (inside the yellow circle on the road)? Don't count the "faded" ones.

Cross the road at the fire hydrant.

4. The sign says: Gates locked between 8.30-9.15am and when?

Go into school grounds left of the above sign. Continue in straight line past first building on left, then past the next buildings which will be on your right. Keep following the path. There will be a playing field on your left and more rooms on your right. Continue to very end. Turn left at fence (by noisy roadway). Head along path.

5. When the path goes into the trees (after about 50 metres), stop and look around. Find sign that has the word "Bridge" on it. What is the number beneath the word "Bridge"?

Head down path that veers to the left. Be careful of low branches near bottom of track! Follow path down to the road. Head under the "bridge".

6. Before no. 36, you pass a seat. When exactly was it donated?

7. There's a street opposite no. 38. Count the trees between that street and the first street on your right. (The trees are on the other side of the road and all within a metre or two of the roadway). Do NOT cross the road.

First right. Cross road at no. 6.

8. There is a tall structure hidden in the tree just right of the letterbox at no. 7. What is the structure made of?

First left.

9. Between house nos. 19 & 21, what number is under 1 8 (which is under C T)?

Continue along same street.

10. What number house is immediately before the power pole with number 27251 on it?

Turn into the park on your left.

11. At the entrance to the park, the sign says something is prohibited in the play area. What?

12. At the other end of the park, what is the total number of slats on one seat (including the slat at the top)?

Go up the pathway near the left end of the park.

13. In this street, how many houses are there with numbers above 10?

Continue along street on footpath on right.

14. At the start of the 3A - 3D driveway, what 2 letters are on a metal plate on the ground?

At end of street, cross to no. 1 on other side of new street. Turn left. Walk 40-50m along to Reserve.

15. Mr M gave this bush area to the people of Tawa in what year? Go back in direction you've just come from. Stay on left side of road and head uphill.

16. Complete missing words: S .......... C .......... A .......... Continue up rise.

17. What turns around and around (in the wind) on the balcony at no. 7?

18. What is the name of the first street on the right? (Don't cross the road to get to it).

Go past no. 23 in street you're already in.

19. The wording is: "Enquire Telecom before .........." Before what?

20. On the corner of colonial is a house with a kind-of crow out the front. What sort of "crow"?

Stay in same street you've been wandering along for the past few minutes. Cross CAREFULLY to the other side of the road when you see a sign (on the other side of the road) with four words on the bottom part saying: .......... .......... Pedestrian Access.

21. What are the two missing words on the white part of the above sign?

Continue uphill in same direction.

22. What number letterbox is immediately after no. 38?

First right. Go down walkway between nos. 54 & 52.

23. Hello who? (Clue: it's on your right on your way down the walkway). Turn right at very bottom of walkway. It may seem like someone's drive, but it's also a walkway!

24. On first corner on left, what real estate firm's name is on a sign on a pole?

Turn left at that corner. Then right at T. 25. On that corner, what Energy Board is on a large humming box?

26. What white vehicle is sitting in the drive at no. 11?

Continue on and cross road at no. 3.

27. How many garage doors at no. 4?

Left at T. Carry on past no.10, then left into public driveway/roadway before no. 8. Start down hill.

28. Whose name is above the number "1" on the first lamp post?

Carry on down under roadway. At other end of tunnel, immediately turn left. Stay left of buildings and head across grass fields. There should be a noisy roadway on your left. Stay close to this.

29. Within 100 metres you'll see a large sign which reads "VISITORS" on the second line. What are the two words above "Visitors"?

Continue in same direction but start heading towards right. Go into side street that you can see.

30. Once in side street, what 2 things are prohibited in school grounds?

Continue along the footpath on the right in that street.

31. What doesn't no. 27 want?

32. What's the name of the street you're now in?

33. No. 15 is interested in Scotch what?

Continue along same street. (Do not veer right).

34. How many lamp posts between no. 7 and no. 1?

35. What word is on the fence at no. 1?

Right at T. Go down the walkway after no. 13.

36. How many steps are there before you reach the second lamp post?

Turn right at the lamp post. When you get down to road, turn left. Go across the pedestrian crossing.

37. How many white lines actually make up the pedestrian crossing?

Head across the foot bridge.

38. Warning: Beware of .......... .......... .......... What are the 3 missing words?

39. At what time is the first train to Wellington scheduled to leave from this station after 7.45pm on a Friday evening?

Go back onto footbridge and keep going (as though you'd never left it). Turn left at end of bridge. Go down ramp. Right into street. Continue to intersection. Carefully cross road towards sign that says "Entry".

40. Underneath that sign, parking is allowed for how many hours?

Carry on along street (past entrance to carpark).

41. At roundabout, what is the total number of "posts" holding up various signs?

Continue through roundabout, heading in same direction as you were before.

42. What kind of elevated track can be seen in the front yard at number 71? (You don't need to go in to property to see it).

43. Which house has the biggest numbers on its letter box between your present position and the end of the street?

Continue to end of street, along path (heading in same direction) and over bridge.

44. What type of drink is available on your left when you reach the other side of the bridge?

Continue along street. Right at T. Head across railway lines, across intersection, turn right at T.

You should be able to see the point at which you started this walk. If you can't, you're lost! If you can, WELL DONE!!!
